The Plight of People in the Industry: Spa, Massage and Wellness?

Hi Everyone,

I would like to pose a question to members of this forum who are into the field of spa, massage, facial therapies, wellness and related fields. Kindly give your occupation/designation (example: spa owner, massage therapist, aesthetician, massage student, etc.) and kindly enumerate what are the three most common concerns, problems or dilemma that you have encountered while in this industry. This might be work related or the industry as a whole. What do you think would be the possible solution/s to solve it?

I’m a massage therapist…I graduated from myomassology school two years ago. I’m not state lisenced but it’s not required yet in my state.
Here are my top three concerns:
First, giving massage is hard on the body. Knowing the proper mechanics helps a lot but you still tend to overuse your thumbs and it can be hard on you knees if you forget proper stance for any length of time.
Second, PAY…spas in my area charge $80 dollars or more for a massage while expecting to pay a therapist in the $12-14 range. Chriropractors start out at similar rates. Doing massage out of your own home or mobile massage is a more profitable option, but it doesn’t present the same professional image and can be dangerous if you happen upon the wrong client. A therapist can really only expect to give about 4 massages a day without destroying his/her own body. I was making so much more at my old job that I’m really only doing massage as a hobby now.
Third: Convincing people how important massage is! After all my schooling, I know now more than ever how important it is but some people still won’t try it. My dad, who has some health problems and could really use it, doesn’t go for “mumbo jumbo” and has never consented to getting a massage from me or anyone else.
On the other hand, I have a few people in my life who try to pressure me into it (husband of a friend, and co-workers at my other job) but I am not comfortable doing massage on them because of the dual relationship.
