My dog can’t seem to shake his ear infection…what do I do?

Over the past 6 months I have taken my dog to the vet twice for the same ear infection. The first time the vet gave us Otomax drops and a liquid earwash and we used both as long as we were supposed to and thought he was fine. (The vet said it’s a yeast infection in the ears btw.) The infection is back (or never went away), we went to a different vet for a different opinion hoping to get some different meds to get rid of the infection and the vet says to continue using what the other vet gave us even though obviously the stuff didn’t work. The vet also says the yeast infection is caused by food allergies but to test for what exactly he is allergic to would cost hundreds of dollars that I don’t have. We have switched to a salmon and lamb flavored Wellness dog food, obviously that is not working. Isn’t there a pill I can give him to get rid of the infection? What can I do? Any suggestions? Only serious answers please, I am desperate, love my dog to death and not getting rid of him!

It does no good to keep treating the symptom if you don’t try to treat the cause. You are feeding a very good food. If you are feeding any treats that contain the common allergens (corn, wheat, soy etc.) stop. You don’t say which Wellness formula you are using but Wellness uses none of the most common allergens. The next most common food allergens are: yeast, chicken, beef, eggs and dairy. If you are using one of the formulas containing any of these, switch. Their Lamb, Barley and Salmon contains none of those. It also has a good ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 fatty acids which is also good for the skin. Fish oil supplement helps.
