Is Fancy Feast dry cat food healthy?

Just in general? It’s the one with Filet Mignon flavor & real seafood Shrimp. Lately, it’s been the ONLY food they will eat. Over the past few months, they have gotten pickier and we’ve tried countless brands/types. I also try to mix in “Wellness Indoor Cat Health Formula” for one cat and another dry food (I forget the name/brand) for another, but they tend to eat around it and prefer to not eat it when I mix that in. It says complete balanced nutrition on the box, but I can’t always trust that. Please help? Thanks!

Technically your cats choice of food is nutritionally complete but that particular variety is sort of like feeding potato chips and a vitamin pill to a child as their diet. They say for pet food you should look first at the first 5 ingredients on the bag since that is what is mainly in the cat food. The first five ingredients in the Fancy Feast are Brewers rice, poultry by-product meal, corn gluten meal, beef tallow(which is fat) preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), ground yellow corn. Poultry by product meal is generally things like ground up necks, feet, intestines, etc. The word by product indicates not the meat part of the bird. The wellness is much better from a health perspective but if your cats don’t care for it then that is not the choice of foods you should feed. There are many healthy varieties out there. Since they seem to like the beef and shrimp flavors you might try some of the seafood flavors. Wellness indoor is primarily a chicken based food so you may find they like the Wellness Salmon but not the Indoor for example. The reason to try and find a higher quality food is that research believes that foods like the Fancy Feast dry and others that are not meat based may be the cause of kidney failure and other diseases that are common now in cats.
