Kitten food help, I need advice …?

I have a 3 month old kitten that has been eating Friskies Wet canned food and Store Brand Dry food. I started researching and found out that what I was giving my cat isn’t very healthy. I went to Petco and bought some Natural Balance and Wellness cans. They are so tiny and expensive!!! I gave my cat some food and it didn’t eat it. I mixed it with the other food and still didn’t touch it. She only ate the cheaper food and left the healthy food.She hates the “paste like” food. Is it okay to give her the food that she wants? And sometimes give her the Healthy food? Or is there vitamins out there. I mean Healthy food is very expensive and its just going to waste. I have bunnies and I feed them mix healthy (timothy hay, fresh green veggies) and mix pallets and they eat everything okay. Any advice, coupon links, homemade cat food recipes???

You kitten is just like a little kid who’s gotten accustomed to eating at McDonald’s and is now being offered a nice healthy chicken breast and a salad. Of course she wants the junk food! And the junk food makers don’t play fair, either. They spray their dry foods with fats and flavor enhancers to make them more appealing to our cats. Sometimes you will have more success to sort of step up to a healthy food. Start with a better quality, but still healthy food. A good choice would be Petsmart’s Authority brand. Then step up to something a bit better like Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover’s Soul, and then finally to the better grades like Wellness.

Cats can be very funny about their canned foods. They react both to texture and flavor. Maybe she’d like some of the “chunkier” ones. Blue Buffalo makes one called ‘healthy selects’ that’s not a pate, she might like that. Wellness makes a pouch food that is chunks in broth. And if you’ve got a smaller chain pet store near you, look for Merrick – they have lots of flavors that are sort of chunky, and my cats like them very much. All of these are very healthy foods.

You know the value of feeding healthy food to your bunnies, and your kitten is no different. It’s a trial and error thing to find what she likes best, and to wean her off the junk food.
