Can I stay on my parent’s insurance?
I am 19 years old, and am currently a full time college student. I am also pregnant, and I’m due in March, which is in the middle of the spring semester. My parent’s insurance (united health care) says that I must be enrolled full time in order to recieve benefits. But, I’m obviously not going to be able to go to school next semester, unless I take online courses, which I really don’t want to do. Can I take off 1 semester for a medical reason (if my doctors gives me a note or something), and still be covered? I live in Texas and covered by parents united health care premium coverage, and I am not married. :/
Healthcare reform allows kids to stay on their parent’s policy until age 26 whether you’re in school or not. It went into effect 9/23/10 but allows companies to wait until their next open enrollment, which could be as late as next September. You’ll want to call your customer service number to find out when it goes into effect for your policy.
