Public Health History Powerpoint

History Project Presentation Ideas?

For my culminating task for history (15% of my final mark) I have to make a presentation on Tommy Douglas (for those of you who don’t know who he is, he’s the creator of universal health insurance in Canada)

Anyways, I have no ideas on how to present. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

We are not allowed to do powerpoint presentations.

Also, I’m not the best public speaker/actor, so…
Also, we get more marks for being as creative as possible.
I don’t think a video would work, but it was a great suggestion.

It depends a bit on your time and resources, but what about making a video? If the guy’s a healthcare type, you could use clips from documentaries and/or hospital dramas and other tv shows to illustrate your points in a fun way. In between these clips, you can either talk in person, but what might be smoother (and easier for you) is if you can either just record your speaking parts and put them in the video as well. If you’re really tech-savvy, you could do a voice over.

I definitely know there’s an episode or two of Scrubs that deal with patients without insurance.

You can also look at House, Grey’s Anatomy and ER. You might not be able to find specific insurance-related episodes in all, but depending on what you do bring up, you could possibly find clips.

There’s also that episode of Friends you could use where Joey’s kicked off his health insurance, or the one where Rachel doesn’t have health insurance so she and Monica trade identities:

And if you want to get serious and show some ramifications to not having universal health insurance, you could use a clip from John Q, where a father (Denzel Washington) takes a hospital hostage because his son needs a heart transplant and he his insurance won’t cover it and he can’t raise the money in time. Excellent film.
