What to do when you’re put off from seeking mental health help because of bad experience in past (UK)?

I have depression and a personality disorder. Last summer I had a bad patch and was seen by the mental health assessment service and treated by the crisis team. They said it was that or be admitted into hospital. The social worker I saw from the team was nice and put some long term solutions in place. The psychiatrist changed my meds. I found the daily visits from the nursing staff awful though. They were rude, sarcastic at times and seemed like they just didn’t want to be there.

I’ve been going downhill lately and am now really struggling not to act on suicidal thoughts. I have a housing support worker and if I go to my GP she will contact the assessment team again. Im scared of being referred to the crisis team again and being made to feel like dirt.

Has anyone else had a bad experience with crisis services? How do you overcome having to see them again? I’d appreciate some advice.

I have bi polar, borderline personality disorder and Recurrent depression syndrome and over the years have seen many mental health professionals some not so kind as you have experienced yourself. One of the things I have learnt especially about my personality disorder and depression is that when I am in crisis I see everyone as a threat and am overly sensitive to what people say as well as that I have learnt that the people who help us sometimes have problems at home and wrongfully bring them to work. I have had to stand up for myself. Infact I was so annoyed once I told a psychiatrist could he talk to my face instead of my boobs lol. Tell your doctor how you feel and your fears about the crisis teams lack of sensitivety towards you last time. Doctors in the past have helped me change psychiatrists and communtity psychiatric nurses. By the way are you in South Wales uk as it sounds like the team here. You can also ring the nhs to ask for help and complain. I really hope this helps as I know how desperate and lonely it feels when you don’t think you can trust anyone to care for you properly. In the meantime try and be kind to yourself by telling your brain if it cannot say anything nice to you then you are not going to listen to it and force yourself to think of something that made, could make you feel good.
