would having had depression stop me from becoming a social worker in the uk?

i know you have to fill in a medical questionnaire before you can take the degree and i’d kinda like to know if it’s worth me applying if my past ill health will work against me.

I think it would be discrimination if it was held against you. However give some thought to your history of depression. Have you learnt something from the experience which makes you a more insightful helper? If the answer is yes then go ahead. Do remember that people jobs can be quite stressful – you meet many appreciative people, but you also meet people who are critical and often this can be very personal. As a front-line worker you may find you have to bear the brunt of a lot of dissatisfaction with services where it is not your fault and where you are unable to change things. You may also meet people who, despite your best efforts, do not show any improvement in function or coping, and you then question your approach and abilities.
But above all remember this is a job requiring a human touch, and I’m sure your experience of depression will help.
