Low Income Health Insurance California
Am I supposed to have Medi-Cal (18 year old college student)?
I live in California and just turned 18 years old. I had Kaiser Permanente as my health company/insurance (courtesy of Healthy Families), but Healthy Families stopped my coverage a little before my 18th birthday.
Today, I got a package containing an Anthem Blue Cross Medi-Cal member ID card. I never applied, and I THINK (not 100% sure) that the people at Healthy Families applied for me. My family is low income, and I have an older brother who’s 20 and does not have Medi-Cal coverage (he has health insurance from his university).
Am I supposed to have this coverage when my brother does not? What is Medi-Cal exactly (the handbook they sent me was in a Vietnamese; I only speak English 
)? I’ll call them tomorrow, I just wanted to have an idea of what Medi-Cal is.
Medi-Cal is the California Welfare insurance program. When you call be prepared for a long hold time. Depending upon when you call it can take hours to find the right person.
