if your kids sometimes take a mental health day off from school (or you from work) due to stress,?

do those days actually help in feeling less stressed in the long run?

i see a lot of people talk about giving their kids mental health days from school. i can’t help thinking that in my town that might be fine at the elementary level but at the middle school level and above it would probably just add significantly to many kids’ stress, since kids are required to make up tests, quizzes, homework, and classwork for five or more classes whenever they miss a day. similarly, if i had taken a mental health day when i was working i would have needed even more such days on returning, because i’d have so much catching up to do it would just have made me even more stressed out than i was to begin with.

does a random day off revitalize you or your kids so much that it’s worth all the extra work when you get back up and running?

I don’t know about revitalize but towards the end of the third semester on, as long as the kids have not missed too many days AND their grades are in the A/B range, I allow for a “mental health” day for some Mommy and me. Yeah, I could do it on their legit days off from school BUT they kind of like the “naughtiness” of playing hooky. We really make the best of it too, as dorky as it is, we go on educational field trips. This year, all three of them took off the same day and we went down to Harrisburg and watched our government at work. The boys really liked it. Next year, we are saving up to start a hooky day on a Friday and take a weekend trip either to Washington DC or Philadelphia.
