Health Vocabulary Terms
Need help with mental health vocabulary?
Too many people say they are “depressed” when they are really just sad. I’m really close to someone with actual depression, and it bothers her to hear people use the term so casually. What would be an appropriate term for something much more than just “sad’ that is less than diagnosed depression.
David Mesirow’s answer was perfect, but I just wanted to add that you shouldn’t worry about it too too much. That’s exactly like how “OCD” has gone from a mental illness to meaning that you like things to be clean or think about things too much. Like depression, it has slipped into colloquial usage, and while it is insulting to people who actually *suffer* from these disorders, I don’t think people really realize that and will continue to use it.
