My cat has just been extremely cautious lately?

Okay so we took a vacation to Florida for a week, we had someone come in and refill the food bowl and get them new water every few days. When we got back our cat wasent eating, she was hiding under a table, and her vomit was yellow. We took my cat (about 6 years old) to the vet because we had no idea what to do, the vet thought that she may have swallowed something, so they cut her open and found nothing. just a fatty liver. when we got back, she was just fine health-wise, but now shes extremely cautious, shes gain a lot of weight, and she doesnt play with her toys anymore. she just sleeps in the cat bed all day and is scared to do anything else. Anyone know whats wrong?

If you’ve just got back from a trip, the cat may be suffering from separation anxiety. Animals don’t understand when or why their owners leave. And if the animal isn’t familiar with the person coming to feed it, then it’s even more afraid. Cats are especially sensitive to changes in their environment and if traumatic, can lead to them being withdrawn. At this point, the cat is scared and doesn’t trust you because she feels she’s been left behind.

Your cat has to go through it’s blues period but you as an owner can try and coax her out of her hiding spots with the promise of catnip, cuddles, and yummy treats. It’ll take a while for her to come around though. It’s important that you do your best to gain your animal’s trust. Cat’s aren’t like dogs or fish or any other pet. They’re extremely intelligent and remember things fairly well.

When I go on a trip, I leave a few shirts I wore to bed a few nights in a row so that my cat would be familiar and comfortable with my scent. When a cat rubs against you or another cat, they’re sharing scents. You smell like them and they smell like you. This brings forth a community scent, because cats are very social in nature. (A good example is a pride of lions) Put these articles of clothing or blankets around where the cats normally sleep. And when she curls up in her little cat bed, she won’t be as afraid.

If someone is going to watch your cat, or any animal for that matter, I would have that person meet the animal a few times before leaving. This way the animals is comfortable around this person. It’ll make the separation for the cat much easier.

Another option would be to ask the person looking after your animal to stay at the house. That way the cat won’t be startled by the constant coming and going of the person.
