Should I stay in the company or leave?

I am a temp and this Monday I will go into an interview for a job position my manager paid consultants to create for me. My boss in January asked if I want to stay and I said yes. This is a government so is not easy to create a position plus they hired a consultant. I want to leave cause these few months I realized I want to go back to the industry I studied in and I no longer want to work in the government. Basically I want to pursue my dream career. My manager yesterday told me to be prepare for monday’s interview which he will interview me for. Should I stay for sometime (how long?) do u think I should apply to jobs now if I am planning to leave or should work in the permanent job for six months? The job created isn’t bad but I want a professional care like actuary or health information analyst. Instead of quality assurance in alcohol and gaming industry since I studied computer science and life science. At that time I just want a government job but now I want to be a professional.

Do not quit until you have a firm job offer. It is always easier to get a job when you already have one. Since your manager created this position by hiring a consultant, I think you have some obligation to him. You can take the job and work for six months or tell him what your plans are; but if you quit now, there is no guarantee you can find another job you will like. If taking this position is the only way you can stay on and if you don’t have leads for a job you can get into almost immediately, give it a try. There is nothing not professional about working for the government. This guy went far out on a limb for you so you don’t want to slam the door in his face. Once you find your dream job, you can explain that this opportunity came up and you now realize that the position you hold (that he created for you) is not right for you. If the job market were better, I’d say turn down the opportunity and apologize for not figuring out what you wanted sooner, but I keep reading about people who have been out of work for over a year and don’t want you to be in that position. It could put you in the position of trying to get onto a fast food job in order to support yourself while you keep looking for that dream job. You need to think about the relationship you have with your manager, his need for a good employee, and the risk to you if you do speak up or if you don’t. Consider looking within your government for a job in your field.
