Intending to open a homemade cake, cupcakes and cookies small business in NYC, what kind of permit?
What kind of permit should try to get from the health department of NYC?
Also, I live in a rented 3 rooms apartment where the kitchen is the biggest room. I have enough space, but the fact that is rented with no contract could be a problem for selling my cakes, cookies, etc? I mean, I don’t want to open a store or coffee shop, I just want to make them there and people can come and pick them up or I can delivery them.
How should I start? I’m reading the health department website of NYC, but I’m quite confused cause they have many types of food permits.
You should first start by finding out if the zoning will allow you to use your space as a bakery is allowable. After that you will need health inspections, sanitary commercial appliances, and proper permits and licensing from the state and City. You will also have to apply for Liability insurances and business licenses. Believe me, there’s much more involved getting opened and obtaining the permits and licensing than just baking a cake in a home oven and selling it.
