Health Facts For Kids

Is showering or bathing a health or social issue?
I work with kids with developmental disabilities. I have a counselor who says that showering is a social issue, not a health issue so ensuring that my kids shower is not acceptable and that I should not power struggle the issue, if they dont want to shower, then find out why they dont want to shower, but dont push the issue, so what if they dont want to shower. This goes against everything that I believe in and I need some documented facts to support that it is a health issue. We have bacteria on our skin, rashes can occur, etc but I need facts for this counselor, anyone have any suggestions?
Cleanliness is next to Godliness,
You are correct, they MUST BE KEPT clean to prevent diseases. Oh my goodness, you aren’t kidding what type of things can get started. Yeast infections, not to mentin the rashes you speak of from moisture, I would have to handle these then with plastic gloves all the time because of the bacteria on them for sure. It will most certainly want to crawl on over to you. It should be reported and you should tell them so before you do it. Do you have ‘charts’ that state when you do things for the patients? You may suggest a simple chart like an excel chart that shows a check or an X when something is done and bathing or showering is listed too on it. And soon, when this shows up as not being done, you can then have this as a record. You don’t have to mention why you want the chart, just maybe that a a chart like this would be easier for you to use or something. You figure it out, you’re the professional in that way. And slip in the bath thing in it or cleaning issue or wording in another way or whatever it takes to your satisfaction without a word to them, they won’t notice it. What’s another word for shower or bath?
If they don’t want to shower, can you make it ” fun ” by putting a plastic chair into the shower? Let them sit on it while they do a shower?
My husband’s grandmother use to say — wash far up as possible, wash far down as possible — then wash possible!
We use to carry this over to his Mother when she got alhiemers, to remind her HOW to bathe too. She would forget to wash all areas too. So it was a nice respectful way to keep her respectful in our eyes too!
Hope this helps.
