Thanks to anyone who answers!:D,NO rude comments..
The parameters of your question are quite large. ASL is, of course, a language. There is little market value in knowing a language BY ITSELF, but any profession that involves work with the public (social work, law, nursing, etc.) will be enhanced (in some areas, GREATLY enhanced) by having language skills that make the services you offer accessible to the ASL-using community.
If you’re considering a career as an interpreter or as a teacher in a program for the hearing impaired, then you’ll want to get intensive ASL training. Since the pay scale for teachers as well as interpreters varies from state to state, it would be best to research the going rates by contacting the counseling office at the school you are thinking about attending and looking into this. Other considerations are the size of the deaf community in the area where you want to live, the marketability of your skills in that area, and the prevailing attitudes about what trained interpreters are worth.
What you might consider is choosing a service profession such as nursing, teaching, law, or social work and majoring in course work to prepare you for a career in those fields, but minoring in ASL so you can add sign language skills to your repertoire. That way, you can always parlay those skills into an interpreting career with a little more course work if the opportunity presents itself, but you won’t have all your eggs in one basket.
