Just an informal poll about health care?

How do you feel about the health care bill as it now stands? I’m not sure what to think. I haven’t had any health insurance since I lost my job; can’t afford it and with my COPD would be considered as having a preexisting condition. My husband has Medicaid and we’ll both be eligible for Medicare in one and a half years. My medicine is expensive but we are managing to pay for it out-of-pocket. Just barely. By the way, it’s a beautiful morning in Michigan today.

Beautiful morning it was here, too, in the Blue Ridge mountains. At least your COPD would be illegal to qualify as preexisting refusal of coverage. I think to get the truth of what’s in the bill, you have to read journalists’ reportage, rather than political reportage. Last I heard, it was over a thousand pages long. I don’t believe it’s government interference: I think it’s reining in the ongoing atrociousness of it. I think it’s no different than restoring regulation to rein in other immoral business procedures. And I hope something realistic and decent comes in time to release everybody — the wealthy and all those in the middle to the bottom — from profits derived from investments in the surety of illness. The wealthy could then invest for moral profits instead, and medical needs wouldn’t stretch household budgets to force the absence of other needed things, much less the final illnesses costing people their very homes.
