Job interview- if the interviewer asked you If you are gay, Bisexual or heterosexual would you give an answer?

Three years ago I was once asked this and I refused to answer because it does not matter what job you are doing, your sexuality should not be in question. Recently,I was filling in a job application form I was given an option to answer this very same question or not. I declined to answer the question. Both jobs I applied for was care work. Ethics and professionlism should be exercised at all times when doing any sort of care or health job. Do you think it right a employer/interviewer should ask a personal question like that? Or are you happy to answer them so long as you got the job? It does not matter if you are gay, heterosexual or bisexual, so long as you keep things professional between you and the person your caring for. So why the question? Do they have the right to ask? What would you do and would you lie or tell the truth or refuse to answer? Its the principal of the matter, somethings in your life should remain private.

In the UK it is illegal to ask such a question at interview or on the main application form. It is probably also illegal to ask your marital status. It is illegal to ask your date of birth or age. In fact, it is illegal to ask any question that could lead to intentional or unintentional unlawful discrimination.

However, employers may ask you to complete an equal opportunities monitoring form. You may refuse to answer all or part of the form but those on the selection panel may not read your answers until they’ve finalized their recruitment decision.
