THC and SSRI interactions?

I’ve read articles that claim that using marijuana while on SSRIs can increase the amount of THC in the body by up to 4x the amount. If this happens to someone and they stop taking their SSRI or stop smoking weed, will the THC leave the body and the person be okay? Sorry I am just really worried about this– I have anxiety problems. I guess I’m looking for someone who understands the chemistry behind how SSRIs and THC work with the body to tell me if the marijuana user will be okay or not and return to normal after stopping one or the other. Thanks.

Depending on the validity of the research articles you’ve read, it may or may not be true that an SSRI will causes THC levels to remain higher in the blood. But, as with any chemical foreign to the body, it will eventually be filtered out by your kidneys, or broken down by your cells. Drinking an extra glass or two of water will help.

In other words, you’re going to be fine.

Biochemically speaking, SSRI’s prevent your presynaptic neuron from re-uptaking secreted serotonin. (That’s the feel-good hormone.) It is possible that there is some kind of enzymatic interaction with an SSRI and THC. It’s probably minor. Best advice is to chill. If you’re really worried, see a doctor.
