AC Unit needs to be replaced soon but my funds are limited.?

My 16 year old compressor in my AC is not working effectively according to a couple of friends that are qualified (one of them is a Tech and one is just experienced) to know this. I believe it to be true because of the age of the unit.

My question is – where can I go to save on a new unit? Is there any Government Programs that will help to save energy? I am considered low income but the wait list is years and they do not replace the unit. I live in Garland, Texas if anyone has any ideas. Dallas County. I make too much for Health and Human Services to help. I have occassionally gotten the financial help but I really need to quit wasting the energy not just get help paying the $400+ bill each month. My home is 60 years old., approx 1600 sq. ft with austin stone exterior. I need insulation in the attic.

Have you called your electric company to see if they have some sort of program to assist you in replacing your unit? Seems like I’ve seen something in my electric bill about that sort of thing (I’m about 200 miles west of you).

Ask your A/C tech friend if he can find you a good used unit. My husband is a licensed HVAC tech in Texas and has helped friends get good used units for very little. Sometimes people remodel and let a perfectly good unit go to waste, or they decide the unit they have isn’t what they really want (some folks do have more money than common sense), but for whatever reason there may be a good unit sitting somewhere that would work for your situation.

Good luck! I dread the day (probably sooner than I’d like) that we have to replace our hard working old unit.
