Feds cite Massey Energy for impeding W.Va. probe

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Federal regulators have cited Massey Energy Co. for impeding the investigation of the deadliest U.S. coal mine explosion since 1970.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration said Tuesday that it cited the Richmond, Va.-based coal company on Nov. 10. The citation says a Massey employee refused to provide water for a pressure test on sprayers on the Upper Big Branch mine’s main mining machine.

The longwall shearer sprays water to help control coal dust and sparks.

Twenty-nine miners were killed and two seriously injured when a powerful explosion tore through the underground mine some 50 miles south of Charleston on April 5. The blast is the subject of criminal and civil investigations.

A Massey spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

To begin with the essence and style of your “question/rant” reeks of insensitivity and brashness pertaining to the fate of the miners and the surviving family members.

I’m a conservative capitalist and I in no way defend Massey, so your generalization is a failure. It’s not like the miners were unaware of the violations and the risks and NO that is no excuse whatsoever.

What I find so hypocritical of liberals is the TSA issue body scanning and pat down searches. Liberals are responding to conservatives concerns by telling us we can choose not to fly but you libs want to give moslem women a free pass. Last I checked, muslims are blowing up planes. You don’t want us profiling but you’re okay with innocents being blown up?! You can’t have it both ways!
