Dog Health Forum

Why are profess/responsible dog/cat breeders treated so poorly in public forums when they support health/alter
Professional breeders: make very little money if any, are dedicated to improving or exemplifying a favorite breed, work closely with veterinarians, are very ethical in their care and breeding programs, are involved in breed clubs, choose carefully and educate people who wish to purchase/adopt a puppy/adult, support altering so that non-professionals and the uneducated don’t take up back-yard breeding and or breed animals unethically. Professionals have contracts to discourage and or create consequences for people who attempt to breed. Professional breeders are crazy about their dogs and cats! They don’t overpopulate, that would work against them in every way. They usually do rescue as well to keep any out of the shelters. So why do people attack and lump them in with puppymills and back-yard breeders when it’s the average person who does not alter their dogs and proliferates pure and mixed breeds and gives them away or sells to just anyone?
Because people are ignorant and don’t know the difference. I show rabbits, and am getting ready to start breeding later next year, and I’ve been bashed a few times for it. What people don’t understand is that my rabbits will be sold to only screened people who either want to show or people who just simply do not want to adopt from a shelter- people who wouldn’t adopt anyway, and would either buy from me, or a BYB.
Some people just don’t want to adopt shelter pets. I myself have a rescue dog and a rescue cat, and although I love them very much and wouldn’t trade them for the world, I decided to get all my four rabbits from breeders because I didn’t want to deal with health problems again. Dog breeders can get their animals health tested to prevent things like hip dysplasia and heart problems- with shelter pets, you’re taking a chance. All my rabbits were bred by people who focus specifically on temperament and health, as well as the breed standards. If that’s not responsible, I don’t know what is.
I know where you’re coming from- if someone buys a pet or breeds responsibly, they’re automatically condemning another animal to death in the eyes of some people. It’s a wrong assumption, and it’s aggravating, but it’s what we have to put up with. All the more reason to educate people on pets.
