Is it silly to compare funding for Fire departments to Health care reform?
According to the National Volunteer Fire Council, 73 percent of firefighters in the United States are members of Volunteer Fire Departments. Not tax payer paid employees.
Well, in addition, firefighting service is part of the local government charters.
There is no Constitutional authorization for the federal government to be controlling any health care insurance.
Major difference – the local government is acting within it’s charter to negotiate for firefighting service and pay for equipment and property to house it. The federal government would be violating its 10th Amendment limitations by enacting any type of public-option health care reform.
Last point – health care reform doesn’t necessarily mean a government-controlled health care. The Republicans have been proposing reforms that are free-market based, which reduce government control over policies and increase competition and insurance products to the consumer, as well as give individuals the same tax rebates businesses get to offer health insurance.
