Consumer Health Vocabulary
Patient comments to doctor.?
I’m looking for comments from patients of things they would like to say to their doctors about improving the relationship and communication between them Please don’t use doctors’ last names. I’m on a mission to improve the relationships which improves quality of care and satisfaction for both parties. I want to decrease suboptimal communication in a field in which the consumers can not possibly be expected to use the vocabulary and are vulnerable to what ideas, words, instructions, omissions, etc. are chosen by health care providers. Please be just as assertive and honest as you like, without the use of profanity.
My comment would be this: tell me more, doc. Tell me what you’re thinking when you’re staring at the chart. What are you looking at? Assume that I understand what you’re saying. If you go beyond my knowledge, I’ll stop you and ask about it. But I’m making the decisions, so I need all the information. When you recommend a treatment option, tell me a couple other options and give me a couple sentences about why yours is the best choice. I’m not looking to scrutinize your work; I just want to know the situation from multiple angles.
I need you to trust my intellect as much as I trust your knowledge.
